Description

Minimise the traces you leave online.

If we think about what our data says about us, it may not seem worrying at all: who cares that I’m a pop-music fan, that I collect toy cars, or that I have a crush on the IT guy?

The problem is what happens with that information: our data is collected through all our devices, services and accounts, then analysed, shared and sold. Over time, when connected, that information reveals intimate digital patterns: our habits, movements, relationships, preferences, beliefs and secrets are exposed to those who collect our data and profit from it.

In this course you will learn how and why all of this happens, and follow very practical steps to do a data detox and improve your privacy and security online.

The course is free, online and interactive.

Why do your detox?

These days a mobile phone is hardly a telephone at all — calls are the thing we do least with it. Smartphones are super-portable computers; they are with us all the time and everywhere we go: at the mall, at the bar, when we travel and even in the bathroom!

Many people connect to the internet entirely or almost exclusively through their phone. That is why we built this course on the Data Detox Kit with a focus on the smartphone.

But don’t worry! Many of the tips we discuss also apply to other devices such as tablets, desktops and laptops.

8 ingredients in hands-on workshops.

The course is a detox combo of 8 easy, practical workshops.

  1. Discovery Let’s face reality and assess the damage: who are you online, to other people?

  2. All in one place Almost everyone uses at least one Google product (“hold on, let me Google that”). But do you use Google so much that the company knows you better than anyone?

  3. Being social We connect with friends through social networks and apps as much as in person — and we share a lot of personal information along the way.

  4. Search and browse Your browser is your gateway to the internet, and if you suspect it is yet another great data hoarder, you’re right!

  5. Connect Your smartphone is a runaway data generator, so let’s get it under control. First we look at how and where that data is generated and collected, and then the detox begins.

  6. Cleaning up Your apps generate as much excess data as your smartphone, if not more — so the focus here is an app clean-up. You will feel so light afterwards that you’ll wonder why you never did it before.

  7. Who do they think you are? So far we have investigated what data is collected by your smartphone, browser, apps and platforms like Facebook and Google — but we haven’t taken a good look at why. We explore that question. Get comfortable and grab a cup of coffee: today calls for some reflection.

  8. Building a new attitude Since a good detox can only be sustained by a healthy, balanced digital life, it is vital to create a follow-up plan that works for you. Otherwise the data pile just keeps growing.
