Campo Grande represents 11.0% of the population of Campinas — 125,044 people. IBGE released the microdata from the 2022 Census on 31 August 2026, and only since then has it been possible to read the Census in territorial detail. Casa Hacker asked IBGE for the sample microdata, gathered the district’s 256 census tracts, cross-referenced the sample with the universe and assigned neighbourhood names to 249 of them using the CNEFE, forming 43 localities.
The research shows that the internet has arrived where university degrees have not yet reached: 90.0% of households have internet (compared to 92.0% in Campinas), but only 8.4% of people aged 25 or over hold a university degree (compared to 29.8% in the city). The median per capita household income is R$ 1,067, compared to R$ 1,750 in Campinas, and 60.4% of households live on up to one minimum wage per capita, compared to 34.7% in the city. Within Campo Grande itself, inequality also has a geography: across the 47 tracts located in favelas or urban communities (20,351 people, 16.3% of the district), the median income of the head of household is 24% lower than in the rest of the territory.
When it comes to colour or race, the picture is different. In Campinas, the median per capita household income for white people is R$ 1,925, compared to R$ 1,212 for Black people. In Campo Grande, this gap almost vanishes — R$ 1,000, R$ 837 and R$ 906 among white, Black and mixed-race (pardo) people respectively —, because the territory already compresses everyone downwards.
At the Varal dos Números, these data are hung on a string across stations, and the group reads their own territory through three questions: what are you seeing here, does this match what you experience, and what is this number failing to tell us. Disagreeing with the data is a contribution. It is dialogue, debate and an exchange of experiences among leaders, residents and organisations.
